What are diamonds?
Diamonds are precious gemstones composed of carbon atoms arranged in a crystalline lattice structure.
Renowned for their durability, diamonds rank as the hardest naturally occurring substance on Earth, scoring a perfect 10 on the Mohs scale of mineral hardness.
Diamonds possess a remarkable ability to refract and reflect light, creating their signature brilliance and sparkle. They are treasured for their natural beauty, rarity and enduring value, and often used as a symbolic expression of love and commitment, notably in engagement rings and wedding rings.
How are diamonds formed?
Diamonds form deep within the Earth's mantle, where intense heat and extreme pressure transform carbon-rich materials into crystalline lattice structures.
Volcanic eruptions propel these precious gems to the surface via kimberlite and lamproite rocks. These rocks cool down quickly, ensuring the diamond crystals are preserved safely inside.
Mining operations will then extract these rocks to recover the diamonds.
This remarkable geological process spans billions of years and leads to the creation of diamonds.
What are the 'Four Cs' of diamonds?
The 'Four Cs' are a widely recognised framework used to assess and evaluate the quality and value of a diamond. They are:
Carat Weight: The measure of a diamond's size, with one carat equal to 200 milligrams.
Cut: How well the diamond has been shaped and faceted. This can significantly impact a diamond's brilliance and how it reflects light.
Clarity: The presence of internal or external imperfections, called inclusions or blemishes.
Colour: Graded on a scale from "D" (colourless) to "Z" (light yellow or brown). The less colour a diamond exhibits, the more valuable it is considered to be.
These Four Cs collectively determine a diamond's desirability, quality, and value. Balancing these characteristics allows buyers to select diamonds that align with their preferences, budget, and intended use, whether it's for an engagement ring, necklace, or other jewellery.
Which wedding anniversary is diamond?
Diamonds are the traditional gifts of a 10th or a 60th wedding anniversary.
A 60th anniversary is also often referred to as the "Diamond Anniversary".
What are fancy coloured diamonds?
Fancy coloured diamonds encompass a wide range of colours beyond the traditional colourless or near-colourless diamonds.
This includes yellow diamonds, brown ('champagne' or 'chocolate') diamonds, pink diamonds, blue diamonds, green diamonds, red diamonds and black diamonds.
These colourful diamonds are prized for their individuality and are often used in high-end, custom made jewellery.
You will find a number of pink diamond and yellow diamond pieces available at the Matthew Ely Jewellery boutique, in addition to loose gemstones in various colours.
