How to Find the Perfect Jewellery Gift
Jewellery may seem like the “fail safe” gift idea. Whether you're celebrating 1, 10 or 50 years together, diamonds and pearls (not to mention rubies, emeralds and aquamarine) are sure to impress.
But how do you choose the perfect piece? After all, that choice will be a reflection of the recipient’s personality, and of your relationship. With that in mind, here are five things to remember (from a jeweller who’s had some personal experience in this area!).
1. Choose their favourite gemstone, or one with a special meaning
It could be a gemstone that’s special to them, one that they wear frequently, or one that reminds you of them. For our ten-year anniversary, I handcrafted my wife a diamond and yellow sapphire ring – vibrant, unique, and durable enough to put up with me for a decade! There’s something about yellow sapphires that always make me think of her.
Buying a gift for your significant other? There’s an anniversary gemstone aligned to – well, pretty much every year.
And if all else fails? Monthly birthstones, for their birthday or even their/your children’s birthdays, are always a good idea. Scroll down for the full list by month.

2. Engravings and secret messages for a personal touch
Transform your gift from something special to something simply irreplaceable.
Engravings can be as simple as a single letter or date etching. This is possible for all custom made pieces, including wedding rings, engagement rings or eternity rings.
More complex and unique engravings are also perfect for special anniversary and milestone gifts. Signet rings, for example, can be personalised with intricate or matching patterns and unique gemstones. Traditionally worn as a mark of status and etched with designs like a family crest, these rings were once used to make personalised wax seals for letters and documents.
Looking for something even more unique? Anything's possible! Just for example, an engraved ocean scene and hidden octopus etched into a tourmaline gemstone! This 18ct Yellow Gold, Tourmaline, Diamond, Sapphire, Garnet, Amethyst & Tanzanite ring, Sanctuary, was designed and hancrafted in store by Matthew Ely Jeweller, Velvet.
3. Stick with the classics
Elegant and timeless, it’s hard to go wrong with diamonds and pearls. Tennis bracelets, simple pendants and classic studs make the perfect choice for anniversaries, birthdays and Christmas gifts, and can easily be personalised for something extra special.
Remember to think about what colour the recipient would usually wear – yellow, white or rose gold.
These pieces – simple, elegant styles – can be layered and stacked together for unique looks, making them anything but ordinary. Think multiple tennis bracelets casually layered up a wrist or arm, or diamond eternity rings stacked together with pops of sapphire or ruby.
4. Let them decide (but make it extra special)
Some statement personalities are only matched by statement pieces of jewellery. Colour blocking, bright gemstones. bold cocktail rings and Art Deco designs have all made their mark in the past year.
Unsure what they'd like? Ask me (Matt) in store. We can do some sleuthing and work through it together.
Alternatively, let them make the final decision, with a Mathew Ely Luxury Experience Voucher. The recipient will receive a private invitation to attend a custom made consultation, get an insight into what happens “behind the bench” and work with me to create their ‘perfect’ piece of jewellery – from selecting gemstones to sketching a final design. Note: I’ll sketch while they sip on French champagne!
5. Tell the story with ‘making of’ sketches and photographs
Every piece of jewellery has its own story to tell.
A selection of our current Collection pieces come with their original sketch and making of photos, just like this 18ct White Gold, Tourmaline, Sapphire, Diamond & South Sea Pearl Art Deco Necklace. These can be printed in a leather-bound book with a personal note, just for something extra special.
All major custom made pieces and jewellery restorations will also be accompanied by a special ‘making of’ gallery, original sketches and certificates.
