Introducing Velvet

You may have met her in person at the Matthew Ely boutique, or you may have seen her incredible, nature-inspired designs on social media. Either way, our up-and-coming jeweller, Velvet, is a face (and name!) to remember.

Velvet’s unique talent has already been nationally recognised. Her most recent creation, ‘Sanctuary’, was selected as a finalist at the 2021 Jewellers Association of Australia Australasian Jewellery Awards, where she was also voted as ‘People’s Choice Finalist’. Velvet's Background

Velvet has worked as a jeweller with Matthew Ely for more than 2 years, developing a reputation for her fine artistic style and one-of-a-kind pieces. You may recognise some of them from our Queen St boutique or social media… although they’re generally snapped up within days (or hours) of appearing in the window.

Prior to her apprenticeship, Velvet completed her Certificate III in Jewellery Manufacture at TAFE, and recently graduated with a Diploma in Gemology.

Style & Speciality

Colour Blocking, Nature Inspired, Enamelling

Typically inspired by the natural world and ocean, featuring bold colours and hidden surprises, Velvet’s pieces are instantly recognisable.

“I love bright, bold jewellery and colour blocking in rings and earrings,” she says.

“The juxtaposition of bright gemstones, like aquamarine next to sapphire, can create true statement pieces that stand out against any outfit. In my day-to-day, I usually wear black – so the jewellery I design and wear will be bold, mixing pinks, greens, oranges and blues together. I also love pink gemstones like morganite.”

“More recently, I’ve been really gravitating towards the technique of enamelling, whereby a fine pigment powder is applied to the metal and then heated to a high temperature in the kiln. It sets like glass, forming a solid layer of colour.”

I adore this 18ct White Gold, Tsavorite and Diamond Ring, which resembles leaves or beautiful green flowers. For classic diamonds, it's got to be this 18ct White Gold & Baguette Diamond Ring.

What's Next?

Nature is still the recurring theme. More floral earrings and enamel flower designs! I’m also working on some custom made projects.
